Paper Calendar Tears Off Its Pages Automagically

This daily calendar mixes analog, digital, nature, and poetry all in one: Every autumn day, each of its pages will fall off automatically, torn by a clever mechanism at its top.

4N wristwatch delivers digital time in a mechanical fashion

Given how simple we've made timekeeping over the years, it was inevitable that luxury watches would have to move into more esoteric lands in order to exude the appropriate sense of wonder when witnessed by those who can't afford them. You might call that the Xperia Pureness effect. Ergo, quite aside from its platinum or 18-carat gold construction options, the 4N watch tries to grab the spotlight with its quirky disc-based mechanism, which rotates numbers (four numbers, hence 4N) into position to display a digital readout of the time. The fact that all three discs -- built out of aluminum or a titanium alloy -- and the MVT01 movement are exposed to the eye earns geek cred from us, while the limited run of only 16 units should ensure the desired exclusivity for the watches' future owners. As the old saying about price goes, if you have to ask, you can't afford one.

Amazing Watch

The more I look at Thomas Prescher's Mysterious Double Axis Tourbillon watch, the more I think it's impossible this thing exists. The watch is completely empty of everything except the tourbillon, apparently floating in the middle of space.

Only one single metal wire holds it there, rotating onto itself and improving the accuracy of the time mechanism. The watch's movement is inside the bezel, and it is powered by the horizontal swinging oscillating weight you can see on the top.

Netflix Would Very Much Like to Know If You Would Like an iPhone App (Hint: YES)

Here's a real interesting question from a recent Netflix survey: "How likely would you or someone in your household be to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on your iPhone via a Wi-Fi network?"

If you recall, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings promised that Netflix streaming would come to the iPhone "eventually" just a few months ago. While survey questions can be indicative of a company's plans—it wouldn't be the first time for this kind of company to tip their video hand via survey—I wouldn't get too excited. Not because of the tech, which is trivial (even considering the jump from Microsoft's Silverlight technology on the desktop) but because of the rights.

Netflix has already run into issues with studios afraid of it massing too much influence, too many eyeballs, squeezing the lifeblood remaining in DVD profits preserved by the window system—the journey a movie takes from the multiplex to DVD to PPV to HBO to cable— before the studios can extract the last final drops themselves. That disgusting 28-day window before you can rent a new Warner Bros. movie is a primo example. So, to get mobile streaming rights? That's probably a whole 'nother ballgame, and I don't expect the studios will play any nicer.

But we can dream, we can hope, we can pray. Even if it is only over Wi-Fi.

Aurora Watch Trades Its Face For LASERS

The Aurora Watch has no interest in traditional minute and second hands. It doesn't even have a dial to speak of. Yep, you're just going to have to settle for good old fashioned touch activated laser hands.

Yes, designer Jihun Yeom has put laser lights in a watch, with red indicating minutes and blue indicating hours. The sad news is, it's only a concept for now. Presumably they need to perfect a fail-safe to keep from singeing wrist-hairs. But there's no question that Future Me will be sporting one of these at each and every light cycle derby.
